Learn About My Design Process

So, How Soon Can I Get This Done?
One of the questions I'm asked most often by clients is “How long will this take, how soon can I get this done?” When answering, I like to briefly explain the steps I take in completing their job. Take a look below:

Step One
I recently designed a postcard as part of a marketing campaign. The campaign included a print card, an email version of the card and a corresponding web page in an exisiting website.

Step Two
Communication is important so my first step was to consult with my client, setting up meeting(s) where we worked together to define their goals and the specifics of their campaign.

Step Three
My client wanted an environmentally sensitive piece and requested a design representing nature. Together, we chose leaves as the theme and restricted the project to responsibly recycled paper and organic inks.

Step Four
Before turning to a computer, I draw out quick sketches of my ideas. Creating and drawing by computer is a time investment. Ensuring that my ideas are well thought out and complete before working electronically saves time and creates a better final product for clients.

Step Five
To save money on printing, the client requested a one-color print job. I suggested the color green. Green represents nature and renewal and it would also hold up well against the specific paper stock I selected. Do you know how many different greens there are? Let's just say, I'm now a “green” expert.

Step Six
The next step was the transfer of my work electronically. Using Illustrator, I recreated my sketches on computer. Keeping in mind that my main design would also need to be translated into an email layout and online.

Step Seven
After investing important time into consultation, research and final design, my client's project was complete. It was well received. The piece was snail-mailed and emailed to 3,500 environmentally sensitve and happy Californians.
